Study on the integration of inland waterway transport in the European transport logistics chain from a regulatory, funding and transport economics perspective

The study was published in the framework of the strong and fruitful collaboration between the Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine (CCNR) and the European Commission. Its main objective is to offer a comprehensive in-depth analysis of the integration of IWT in the European transport logistics chain from a regulatory, funding and transport economics perspective.

As policymakers at both national and European levels have continuously expressed the need to strengthen multimodality in the transport chain, this study focuses, among other things, on the regulatory framework that was adopted so far to further boost the successfull integration of IWT in the European transport system. The study argues that state aid has the potential to play a significant role in improving multimodality. Finally, the study provides some examples of successfully implemented multimodal strategies.
